When you were a young child, and you were asked what you wanted to be when you were an adult, you may have responded with “doctor”, “nurse”, “astronaut”, or some other exciting career. More than likely, you didn’t fully understand until you were an adult, the many career paths in the medical field that are available to students entering the nursing profession. One exciting career option is a nurse practitioner and in this post, we’ll give you some ideas on how to be a nurse practitioner, if this particular option is your choice.

To begin with, a nurse practitioner is first a registered nurse, who has earned the BSN degree, and gained some experience in the nursing field. They have completed additional studies and earned the Master of science degree in nursing (MSN). Having earned the master’s degree, or higher, there are generally four basic choices available. They are certified nurse anesthetist, certified nurse midwife, clinical nurse specialist, and nurse practitioner. Usually, students choose the nurse practitioner route as there are many career options available.
